Countless thousands of unwanted animals are abandoned each year in France alone. Many of these will die of starvation or injury, or be killed on the roads. The vast majority of those who find themselves in official ‘refuges’ will be euthanised for the simple reason that supply well outweighs demand.
While people continue to insist on buying puppies from breeders, this pitiful waste is unavoidable. If you are thinking of giving a home to an animal, please pluck up courage and go to your local shelter. Your new friend may demand a bit more patience, but you will be rewarded over and over again.
We have no fixed tariff for adoption but a financial contribution to cover the costs incurred in preparing an animal for adoption is usually necessary. Where appropriate, the animal will be tattooed or microchipped, vaccinated and sterilised. Animals adopted from the SPA, with our help, are subject to the SPA’s current tariffs. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you are looking for something specific. We can nearly always get you what you want, given a little time!
WHAT DO I DO?
Start by contacting Sheelagh, our Dog Adoption co-ordinator:
Tel: 05 53 54 94 81 (leave a message)
05 53 89 59 35
or mobile 07 81 27 86 51
or email email@example.com
…or the appropriate Foster Carer (see our adoption pages)
WHERE DO I GO?
Home visits, reservations and delivery are generally not possible. You should expect to visit the dog / cat in its foster home and be prepared to answer questions about your circumstances, such as whether you have a fenced garden, other animals, young children, whether you’re at home most of the time etc. These questions are not intended to be intrusive. We are just anxious to avoid a mis-match – as are you! The Foster Carer system ensures a well-assessed ‘fosterling’ and we pride ourselves on a very high rate of adoption success.
HOW MUCH DO I PAY?
We have no fixed tariffs. If you decide to adopt, the Carer will tell you how much in vet costs has been spent on preparing the animal for adoption, such as microchip, vaccinations, passport and sterilisation. We ask you to try to cover these costs in your adoption contribution and you will be asked to leave this at the time of adoption – not at a later date. You will complete and sign two rehoming forms – one for you and one for us. You will leave with your new friend, their vaccination book/Passport and in the case of a dog, a collar. A name tag engraved with your phone number can be given / sent to you free of charge.
WHEN DO I BECOME THE LEGAL OWNER?
The ID (microchip or tattoo) card is withheld until you say you definitely want to keep the animal, at which point, we transfer ownership to you.
WHAT IF THE ADOPTION DOESN’T WORK OUT?
If the adoption of any animal fails within 28 days, he / she can be returned on the condition that suitable foster space is available. If you wish, the adoption contribution will be reimbursed in full. After the period of 28 days Phoenix will have no obligation to take the animal back, nor to return the adoption contribution.
In the interest of all parties, Phoenix will try its best to find foster care space for the animal, or failing this, to advertise details on our Facebook page, make an appeal and suggest internet forums and sites upon which you can advertise the animal for re-homing.
