Another great day for our Phoenix Book Fair.

Firstly, we must thank everyone that helped make this Book Fair a huge success with record takings!

We must also thank members Linda and Peter (owners of the book storage barn) for allowing Phoenix the use of their barn over many, many years and welcoming the sorting team on a weekly basis. Sadly for Phoenix, Linda and Peter are selling up and hope to be moving within the next few months, therefore we need to find new premises!  If you know of any large premises near to Bergerac preferably clean, dry and with toilet facilities please contact Peter McAuslan by email: treasury.phoenix@gmail.com

Behind the scenes, this year the Book Sort Team have gained several new sorters who have brought a new dynamic to the Team, while others who have given years of dedication thought it was time to hang up their sorting hats – huge thanks to you all.

The sorters have had a busy time with just five months to sort through all the donations since May’s Fair, something in the order of 40,000 books. Ploughing through them all and selecting the last 20,000 sorted into alpha order, subject and quality to go to the Fair so that visitors can rummage to their hearts content to find their next favourite reads.  This summer was another hot one in the barn with a lot of hard work which went right up to the last week before the fair, but we made it. We would welcome more sorters as we have a number of areas to cover with little back-up in case of illness, holidays etc.  please contact Sandra Hall by email: sand.hall@orange.fr

Donations are also collected by a team of volunteers throughout the region. We are trying to extend this group to cover a larger area. If you would like to get involved with this side of the Book Fair please contact Geoff Hall by email: geoff.hall@orange.fr

The Catering Team beaver away checking out the equipment, shopping, cleaning the kitchen hall, making sandwiches and taking charge of the brilliant edible donations, we also had the attraction of bacon sandwiches.   Most of the catering team donate not only their time, they bake before the day to ensure everyone has something yummy to eat. Some of them are involved with book sorting too.

Book Fair Day 6am start with a slight drizzle, but by midday we had sunshine.  Fine weather helps!

The Phoenix Marquee manned by the Conseil greeted members and visitors, spreading the word about what we do, selling raffle tickets and running the tombola.  The SPA Bergerac brought along several dogs awaiting rehoming, they strutted around trying to catch the eye of prospective adopters.

We had good sales on the bric-a-brac stall and plants. DVDs, CDs, French, Dutch and the Collectibles stalls made record breaking sales. As always, the sales in the hall were brilliant. The children’s stall was popular and hopefully the new format will be a greater success in the future. We always need plenty of donations in these areas and we thank all of those who participated.

The total figure taken on the day exceeded 21,000 €, with a net figure of over 17,500 € a new record!  These proceeds are a substantial contribution to the association’s animal welfare work.
