We have collated some advice & guidance to help you re-home your dog or cat.

Sadly, there are many animals looking for homes here in France, so please do take all the advice offered.

Firstly, it is illegal to re-home a dog without having it identified. All cats being re-homed must also be identified. Kittens can change ownership under the registration number of their mother, but not before the kittens are eight weeks old.

It is also illegal to sell an animal without obtaining a SIREN number and declaring the income.

Official information regarding “animaux de compagnie” is available at http://agriculture.gouv.fr/

  • Your pet must be more than 8 weeks old
  • Identified
  • Possess the relevant documentation (see Step 5)

  • Advertise animal as free/gratuit.

Please follow Steps 1 to 5 below:

CREATE HONEST APPEALING TEXT about your pet, and ensure to include the following details:

a) Name, breed, sex, age, size, weight.
b) The ICAD chip or tattoo number.
c) Information regarding sterilisation/neutering, vaccinations, hygiene, health check, pet passport etc.
d) Mention any issues that your pet’s potential adopters should know about.
e) Describe his/her behaviour around people, children, other cats or other dogs etc.
f) For dogs, provide obedience details i.e. sit, stay, wait commands. walking on/off a lead, recall, general behaviour, characteristics, car travel etc.
g) Include the reason for re-homing. Potential adopters may be suspicious if no reason is given.
h) Don’t forget to include your contact details – name, telephone number, email, postal code, viewing and transport arrangements.

TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS…. good photos are essential.

Produce at least three good photos. Including a close up of his/her head looking directly into the camera lens; a full body standing and one of the animal sitting. As animals are often difficult to photograph, do ask someone to help. It is a good idea to have an object or person in the photograph to help viewers to get an idea of size of a dog.
